   Sixth Grade Art

Select Projects 2015-16

Optical Illusions

Students used line, color, and value to help their artwork achieve a feeling

of depth and movement. Below is a small sample of the artwork done by two sixth grade classes.

Positive and Negative Space Cutouts

The sixth grade art class learned about artist Henri Matisse to help strengthen their understanding of the use of negative and positive space in design. After looking at Matisse’s later work, the students created designs that utilized color and space on a 2 dimensional surface. The designs were created using paper, scissors, glue, and Mod Podge as a sealant. Below is a sample of work that was created specifically for the winter concert.

Subtractive Sculptures

Second trimester art students created subtractive sculptures using blocks of floral foam and carving tools. They were randomly assigned an emotion or character trait and told to represent it abstractly. The sixth graders brought their abstract subjects to the physical world by paying close attention to form and color.

Screen Art

As a group project, members of the 6th grade art classes teamed up to design and create colorful displays using paper and chicken wire. The groups designed the screens knowing that they would be displayed in the large windows in front of the guidance office here at Glenbrook. These site-specific works of art utilize the natural light coming through the windows to help the hallway act as a colorful gateway to the Arts & Technology wing of the building.
